What is cheerleading?

This term refers to an organized support group for teams in different sports. Describing what cheerleading is, it should be said that the term comes from the English language and it combines two words: “cheer” - to support and “lead” - to manage. Today, support groups have moved to a new level, as they take part in the World and European Championships. The fiery performances of girls with bright pom-poms are based on rhythmic dances, stunts and other elements.

To further understand what cheerleading is, we offer several interesting facts related to this sport:

  1. The main attribute of cheerleading - pompoms - began to be actively used in the 30s.
  2. Many stadiums in America and Europe have special sectors for cheerleaders. This became possible thanks to the initiative of Lindy Bothwell, a cheerleading coach from the University of Oregon.
  3. Many modern stars participated in the support group, for example, Madonna, Cameron Diaz and Meryl Streep. Many famous men also took part in cheerleading: Ronald Reagan, Franklin Roosevelt, Michael Douglas, George W. Bush and many others.
  4. Approximately 50% of all sports injuries in America occur among cheerleaders who perform complex stunts and acrobatic elements.
  5. Cheerleading has its own code of honor, which includes a ban on taking off clothes, using profanity, drinking alcohol and smoking, and also refusing to do so.

History of Cheerleading

People first started talking about cheerleading teams at the end of the 19th century, and cheerleading immediately became popular. The decision to create the first team was made in 1989 at a meeting of the University of Minnesota. In the early stages, cheerleading was closely related to American football and, interestingly, it was initially an activity for men. Cheerleading has been accepted as a sport since 2001, when the World Championships were held.

Cheerleading competition

World competitions in this sport are held annually. The championship is hosted by the winning team. The leading positions in most cases are occupied by teams from America, Japan, Finland and Germany. The cheerleading championship gave a big impetus to the development of this type of sports dance, so more than 50 countries around the world already have their own sports clubs. Another interesting fact is that there is an International Cheerleading Federation, which was founded in 1998.

Pyramids cheerleading

In each performance, the team uses several pyramids, which can have different configurations, the main thing is to form it correctly and fix it so that no one falls, and the poses of the top ones are as even as possible. At the base of the pyramid are guys or strong girls, and those who are lighter occupy the top positions. The girls at the bottom are the “base”, the middle level are the “mounters”, and the top level are the “flyers”. The program is structured so that cheerleading includes dancing, acrobatics, and feasting, and the transitions from element to element should be almost imperceptible.

Pom poms for cheerleading

It’s hard to imagine a cheerleading performance without pompoms – balls made from thin strips of different sizes. They can use plastic, polyethylene, vinyl, special paper, cotton, and so on. Accessories for cheerleading should not only be bright and beautiful, but also convenient for performing various elements: spins, throws and others.

Pompoms can have different types of holders, which are recommended to be selected individually to make them convenient. There is a regular handle, made in the form of an elongated holder, a dumbbell handle is located, as if inside a pompom, and the third option is a handle in the form of a double ring. The loop handle is suitable when you don't need to toss pompoms. In addition, there are different diameters of balls, for example, for competitions, voluminous pompoms are used, which reach up to 30 cm in diameter.

Cheerleading clothing

One of the main attributes of the dancers’ impact on the audience is their costumes. In most cases they include skirts and tank tops. Clothes should be bright and colorful, so sequins and other decor are often used for decoration. All team members wear the same costumes so as not to stand out from the overall picture. Elastic fabrics are used to sew costumes so as not to hamper the movements of the dancers. If the performance is aimed at supporting a specific team, then the cheerleading costumes will match the color of the club.

Cheerleading chants

To become a member of a support group, you need not only to have good physical fitness and, but also to have excellent diction, a well-trained voice and a sense of rhythm. This is due to the fact that cheerleading in sports involves the use of different chants that are uttered during the performance. These are short poems aimed at raising the morale of the team. They traditionally use bright and expressive words. Chants are divided into two groups: cheers - performed only by cheerleaders and chants - chanted along with the audience. Here are some examples:

  1. We will be the first everywhere and always! We are a support group, you can’t go anywhere without us!
  2. We are cheerleaders, which means we are leaders! Look, you haven't seen anything like this!
  3. We will smile at you, wave our hand: and immediately the stands lose their peace!

Movies about cheerleading

A bright and interesting theme is often used in cinema, because in addition to a beautiful picture of dancing, you can touch on the topic of relationships between girls in a team, rivalry, and so on. Movies from the following list will help you understand what cheerleading is:

  1. « Become successful» 2000 The film tells the story of the captain of the cheerleading team, who must lead his girls to leadership at all costs.
  2. « Light it up this summer!» 2009 The story of how two guys from the football team decided to join a cheerleading group for the summer, where many interesting and funny situations await them.
  3. « Bring It On: All for the Win» 2007. This film is about the rivalry between two bright teams who are determined to win the next competition. The story is not complete without love relationships.

Would you like to congratulate your favorite team that has earned the championship title? As an option, you can arrange a festive party with a feast, entertainment, and a host. Not a single sports party dedicated to honoring the winners, as well as the competitions themselves, is complete without the participation of a dance support group. Artistic, sexy, fiery participants will captivate the audience with their acrobatic stunts and spectacular performances. Cheerleaders will fit perfectly into the format of student parties and various youth events.

Those who have ever attended home matches of their favorite teams will undoubtedly remember the charming girls with bright fluffy pom-poms who run out onto the platform during the break and delight thousands of fans with their fiery performances.

They jump and dance rhythmically, and perform all movements and changes in amazing harmony. At first glance, their entrance serves only to defuse the tension of the match. But everything is not so simple - the dancing girls form a specially trained support group for sports teams. Their performances are called cheerleading. Translated from English: cheer - a welcoming exclamation and lead - to manage. Conventionally means: “leader of those who shout in stadiums”, “management of applause”. And often with emotions.

Cheerleading exists in two forms. On the one hand, this is a colorful show that complements the sports action, on the other hand, it is a completely independent sport: teams compete with each other, national and world cheerleading championships are held. Cheerleading came from America. It received its development in Russia with the advent of American football. The first sports team support group was created in 1996 at the Junior American Football League.

Soon, girls’ interest in the original sport increased so much that in January 1998, the Autonomous non-profit organization Leisure Club “Assol”, established by DLAF, appeared, the main task of which was the development of the Sports Team Support Group program. In August 1999, on the initiative of the Assol Club, the ROO “Federation of Cheerleaders - Support Groups for Sports Teams” was registered. The popularity of cheerleading continued to grow rapidly; already in 1999, the first cheerleading competition for the Federation Cup was held at the Dynamo Sports Palace. Subsequently, these competitions began to be held annually according to a specific program.

It should be noted that success came to cheerleaders in Russia instantly. Nowadays, not a single decent event - be it the MTV Awards or a hockey match - can do without them. Even corporate cheerleading appeared. This is when large companies or banks organize leisure activities for their employees. They can create their own football team - and their own cheerleading group. They will recruit senior managers who are far from model standards, buy them pom-poms, and sew suits with the label of their oil or brewing office. But on big holidays they still invite professionals, who receive about 1,000 rubles per person for each performance. The money is small, but when there are a lot of orders or you manage to conclude a long-term contract, it works out well.

By the way, becoming a cheerleader is not so easy. There is too much mixed into this movement: a girl joining the close ranks of cheerleaders must have clear diction, impeccable sports training, with the obligatory knowledge of the elements of gymnastics and acrobatics, choreographic abilities and an ideal appearance. For example, members of the most prestigious Russian cheerleading team at the CSKA basketball club are required to visit the solarium twice a week. "For what?" - you ask, because no one forces boxers to get pedicures regularly. And then, cheerleading is not just a sport, but a way of life. The main task of the girls with bomps is not to support their team, as it was in the good old days, but to please their fans and the fans of their opponents.

In this way, it is possible to relieve emotional tension in the stands and avoid a showdown between heated fans. All means are good here: dazzling smiles, exciting plastic surgery, short skirts and bright pom-poms. No less attention is paid to the moral character of cheerleaders: the rules require them to show respect towards coaches, cheerleaders and fans of other teams, monitor their speech, avoid rude and obscene expressions addressed to the above-mentioned persons, refrain from smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages and drinking narcotic drugs. Although what kind of cigarettes and alcohol can there be? Under such loads...

Training takes up almost all of their free time, and during competitions the girls on the dividing line sometimes work harder than the players themselves on the field. And this is not without injuries: according to statistics, 50 percent of all sports injuries in the United States occur among cheerleaders. And yet, millions of girls around the world dream of being on a prestigious school or university cheerleading team. Indeed, in this case, honor and respect from the opposite sex are guaranteed to them. At least that's what usually happens in Hollywood films. What cinema!

The list of past cheerleaders includes more than enough famous names: Madonna, Michael Douglas, Meryl Streep, Jamie Lee Curtis, Hillary Clinton, Sandra Bullock. It’s curious, but four people who at different times were entrusted by the people of America to lead the country also grew out of the support group. Thus, Dwight Eisenhower organized fans in Nebraska, Ronald Reagan fired up the crowd in Illinois, George W. Bush easily handled the megaphone in Massachusetts, and Franklin Roosevelt shouted the same “boom-boom-boom” from the stands of Harvard.

Girls who can do everything! - this is how they often answer the question of who cheerleaders are. English cheer means an exclamation lead- to lead. Cheerleaders are a group that supports one or another sports team and at the same time excites the audience and does not let them get bored. From an applied element of sports games designed to fill pauses between halves or rounds, cheerleading has long become an independent sport. It has a show, acrobatics, gymnastics, and dance elements.

Few people know that cheerleading originated back in the 1870s, but it gained real popularity only in the 50s of the last century. The birthplace of this sport is the United States. There are two types of cheerleading:

  1. Kind of sport consisting of a competition between teams. There are clear rules and requirements for the training of athletes, their physical fitness, performance format, mandatory and additional elements of the program.
  2. Entertaining cheerleading, which consists in promoting a healthy lifestyle, attracting fans to stadiums, creating a positive atmosphere in the gym, supporting athletes.

In 1998 it was created IFC - International Cheerleading Federation, which included the USA, many European countries (Denmark, Finland, Germany, Austria, Hungary and others), Asian countries (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan), countries of the former USSR (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan).

Cheerleading in Russia

It came to Russia with American football. Both sports are still not widespread, but they have many fans. It is believed that the first cheerleading team appeared in our country in 1996. And two years later, under the auspices of the Children's League of American Football, the non-profit organization “Assol” began to operate, the main task of which was to popularize support groups for sports teams.

In the summer of 1999, the Russian public organization “Federation of Cheerleaders” was officially registered. A few months later, the first major competitions took place in Moscow. However, cheerleading became an official sport only in 2007.

A landmark event for the Russian Cheerleading Federation was the World Championship in this sport, which took place in Korea. More than seventy cheerleading teams from 21 countries of the world took part in it. More than 70 teams competed in the Cheer Dance 16+ category, but the winner was the team from Russia, led to victory by coach Nadezhda Denisova. Videos of this finest hour for our compatriots are easy to find on the Internet.

Competitions

Exist national, European and world competitions for this sport. Regardless of the rank of the championship (excluding, perhaps, only city and regional), a number of nominations are required in the competition program:

  1. Cheer is a complex of gymnastic and acrobatic elements with the obligatory formation of pyramids, numerous dance formations, shouting of slogans;
  2. Cheer dance is a dance program where synchronicity is at the forefront, and the criteria for jury evaluation are plasticity, complexity and quality of choreography, grace of the performers;
  3. Cheer mix - performances of teams, the participants of which are not only girls, but also boys;
  4. Group stunts - a performance by groups of two to five people, in which the main elements are throwing or lifting one of the participants and building pyramids;
  5. Partner stunts - a program for a pair of athletes (usually a girl and a boy, although same-sex couples are not prohibited in some competitions);
  6. Individual cheer - personal performance by the team captain.

Myths and reality

№ 1

In the USSR, cheerleading was known even before the Great Patriotic War.

This is true, but not entirely. Cheerleading in the form that we know now, of course, did not exist, but the performances of athletes were very reminiscent of modern cheer with its acrobatic and dance figures, formations and building of pyramids by group members. Only instead of invigorating chants there were mostly chants within the framework of the then existing ideology, and there were no restrictions on the height of the pyramids at all.

№ 2

Anyone can sign up for the cheerleading team..

Sign up - yes, but become a full participant - it’s unlikely. Firstly, quite serious physical training is required. Secondly, you must have an attractive appearance. Thirdly, the ability to work in a team is a prerequisite. Fourthly, cheerleading is a sport, at times very tough, so balance and the right psychological attitude should never leave either a beginner or a professional.

№ 3

Cheerleading is a sport for high school girls and students who are not yet married.

In fact, no one checks the stamp in your passport before the competition. One team can include both yesterday's schoolgirls who have just turned 18 years old and 30-year-old women. By the way, in Japan there are cheerleading groups where the participants are 50-65 years old. There is a special nomination for them at competitions.

№ 4

Only a girl with model parameters can become a cheerleader.

The cheerleading team has its own distribution of roles. There will never be a fat woman at the top of the pyramid, but to support the lower tier, an XXL lady will come in handy if her dance and sports training corresponds to the level of the team.

№ 5

Cheerleading costumes are expensive and need to be changed for each performance..

The team coach decides together with the participants how often to sew new suits. Typically, each category has its own set. For example, for classic cheer, short skirts and vests made of special non-slip fabric are ordered from dressmakers; for cheer dancing, trousers in a suit, on the contrary, must slide, otherwise it will be impossible to quickly and efficiently perform exercises on the varnished surface of the gym. Professional cheerleading teams have at least twenty numbers in their arsenal and each has its own set of clothes.
