Ryan Gosling

Ryan Thomas Gosling. Born November 12, 1980 in London, Ontario, Canada. Canadian actor.

Father - Thomas Gosling, a traveling salesman at a paper mill.

Mother - Donna Gosling, worked as a secretary.

Has a sister, Mandy Gosling.

Ryan's ancestors are French-Canadian, English, Scottish and German.

He was educated at Lester B Pearson High School in Burlington and Gladstone Public School, Cornwall.

When Ryan was 13 years old, his parents divorced.

As a child, he was fond of action films, in particular, with the participation of Sylvester Stallone. He studied poorly and suffered from dyslexia. Psychologists diagnosed the boy with attention deficit disorder, after which the mother transferred her son to home schooling.

At the age of 13, he took part in the casting of the popular show “The Mickey Mouse Club” - he performed along with such later celebrities as Christina Aguilera and. Ryan's acting career began with this program - he starred in the television projects “The Youth of Hercules” and “The School of Broken Hearts.”

Ryan's career took off when he starred in the controversial 2001 film The Fanatic. His hero is a neo-Nazi Jew who became disillusioned with Judaism and his dream of becoming a rabbi and joined the fascists. Gosling's work evoked a lot of enthusiastic responses from critics, and the actor himself earned attention within the film industry.

In 2002, he returned to the Sundance Film Festival with the independent film Law of Carnage, playing an emotionally vulnerable and lonely teenager, co-starring David Morse. He also received positive reviews for his next role in the psychological thriller Kill Countdown, in which he played a cynical predator.

Gosling's penchant for playing only deep and complex roles led to him landing the lead role in the film The United States of Leland, which starred Kevin Spacey and Don Cheadle.

In 2004, the guy moved away from the usual genres and starred in the romantic melodrama “The Notebook” - a film about an old notebook that preserved the memories of two lovers who found each other, lost and found each other again. It became an undoubted commercial success for director Nick Cassavetes, who had previously known as the creator of the series, and brought worldwide fame to Ryan and his partner Rachel McDamas.

In 2004, at the ShoWest conference, Gosling was named Male Star of Tomorrow.

In 2006, the low-budget film Half Nelson was released, which brought Gosling his first Oscar nomination. He got the main role - a drug-addicted history teacher. But the statuette went to Forest Whitaker.

From 2010 to 2013, Ryan continued to appear in his usual thrillers, dramas and romantic melodramas. In 2010, the film “Drive” was released, in 2011 - the film “Drive”, in which the actor managed to transform himself into a brave and risky racer. It is worth noting that throughout the entire time the hero’s name was never mentioned, and the actor performed most of the stunts without the help of stuntmen.

In 2014, for the first time he acted not as an actor, but took on the duties of a director, directing the fantasy film “How to Catch a Monster.” The mass audience received the film lukewarmly; Gosling’s film was dubbed too intimate and “tooth-gnashingly derivative.” However, he received nominations for two branches of the Cannes Film Festival: one in the “Director's Debut” category, the other in the “Un Certain Regard” category.

In 2015, together with Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Finn Wittrock and Karen Gillan, he starred in the film The Big Short. Ryan appeared in the role of an analyst who managed to earn more than one million during the crisis.

In 2016, the musical “La La Land” was released and the actor was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Sebastian.

In addition to being a talented actor, Gosling is also a recognized musician: he released an album called “Dead Man’s Bones.” In 2009, they shot a video for the song “Name In Stone”, and a year later the video “Pa Pa Power” was released. Ryan performed under the pseudonym Baby Goose.

Ryan Gosling is exactly the kind of person who deserves high praise in all social roles. An excellent actor, a good husband and father, one of the best in the world, and also simply a smart Man with a capital M. This complete guide will show you what values dominate Gosling's life and what behavior patterns the leading man of La La Land inherits.

He's Hollywood's leading man - the people's dance hero - and he looks just as good in a bomber jacket as he does in black tie. He can be sweet (The Notebook), he can be polite (Crazy, Stupid, Love), he can be tough (Drive). Women want him. Men want him, or want to be him, or both.

He is a magnet that attracts everyone to himself. And from all the conversations and interviews, he seems like a pretty decent person. He's also a better actor than we thought. So how does Ryan Gosling do what he does without being really annoying? And what can we mere mortals learn from him?

Uncompromising and cruelty

Ryan Gosling in the movie Drive, 2011

Imagine that a fight breaks out on the street. Two guys grab each other and rush at each other. What are you doing? You stand at a safe distance and film it all on your phone, like everyone else, of course. But not Ryan Gosling. He's as much of a hero in real life as he is on screen, when he happened upon some fighters in Manhattan while returning from the gym a couple of years ago, he got into the fray. We know this because one of the eyewitnesses filming iPhone, posted the video on YouTube. As soon as the brawlers realized who was playing peacemaker, they retreated. For what? Presumably because once you see the elevator scene in Drive where Gosling repeatedly slams a man's head until his skull cracks and caves in, you can't help but notice it. But in real life, Ryan Gosling a lover, not a fighter. In other heroic news, he also saves people from being run over by yellow taxis. The streets of New York are always safer when Gosling walks them.

Interest in women

Ryan Gosling with his mother, Los Angeles, 2013

After his parents' divorce, Ryan and his sister lived with their mother, who he says programmed him to be able to interact with the opposite sex. He likes older women. For a time he was with Sandra Bullock, 16 years his senior, and his wife Eva Mendes, the mother of his two girls, is seven years his senior. He is extremely protective of his family life and is rarely seen in public with Mendes, whom he rarely mentions by name. The couple managed to keep both of Mendes' pregnancies a secret, almost until their daughters, Esmeralda and Amada, were born. Although Justin Timberlake's mother became his legal guardian for a time when, as a teenager, Gosling moved from Canada to Florida to become a member of Disney's All-New Mickey Mouse Club (along with Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears), he loves his mom very much and often takes her to various events.

Elegance

Ryan Gosling, Cannes, 2011.

Ryan Gosling has learned from past mistakes, like the time he showed up to the Half Nelson premiere in a tuxedo T-shirt. These days, his style choices are as unpredictable as his film choices. Now that he wears a tuxedo, he knows that a tuxedo has to be classic. In the heat of the Cannes Film Festival a few years ago, he shocked everyone with his pajama shirt and white trousers. In a tailored suit, he hits the mark every time with bold shades of green, burgundy, brown, cream and blue in varying shades. Velvet, tweed, pattern: wear it. With a tie or a button-down without a tie, Ryan Gosling looks damn good. He is a maverick who gets results despite his unorthodox methods. But one thing remains the same: he is always well-groomed, because, as we all know, cleanliness comes next to Goslingness.

Laughing at yourself

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, Utah, 2010.

Ryan Gosling always remains in the spirit of the times. And what keeps him there is his impeccable acceptance and response to all the attention he receives from fans. He's always joking. A few years ago, two defining pop culture trends merged into the viral equivalent of a "cronut": adult coloring books + photos of Gosling = Color Me Good Ryan Gosling. The man also provides endless source material for Internet diffusion parody. First came Tumblrs like Fuck Yeah! Ryan Gosling (photos of our hero with funny captions “Hey girl”) and Feminist Ryan Gosling (similar, but this time with feminist captions “Hey girl”) and many others. These have been replaced by memes such as the excellent “Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal”: an episode in which the star apparently repeatedly refused to eat an offered spoonful of breakfast cereal. When the episode's creator sadly passed away, Gosling made a video of himself eventually eating the cereal as a tribute. Ryan Gosling truly is a gift.

"Get Your Hands Dirty"

Ryan Gosling in the film La La Land, 2017.

It takes a lot of work to make everything look so easy. The guy playing the piano in La La Land? Yes, it's really him, and he doesn't have double jazz hands. He studied the piano for three months, practicing two hours a day, six days a week. “In what other job is it part of your job to just sit at a piano for three months and play?” he said. “It was truly one of the most successful pre-training experiences I’ve ever had.” Apparently, it's not that hard to find the motivation to play the piano or learn to dance when your reward is several million dollars and there's the possibility of Oscar glory. But when Gosling finds a project he's passionate about, he rolls up his sleeves. Consider this: In 2004, he opened the Moroccan restaurant Tagine in Beverly Hills. Far from it, he "spent all his money" buying the restaurant on impulse and then spent an entire year doing many of the renovations himself. According to his Wikipedia page, he still controls the menu.

Win on win

Ryan Gosling at the Golden Globe Awards, Los Angeles, January 2017.

The idea for this article came about when Ryan Gosling won the Golden Globe Award in January of this year. He strode onto the stage like human chloroform as audience members and inanimate objects fell theatrically in his wake. He gave a perfectly conveyed thank you to his "lady" and "lover" Mendez for allowing him to do what he does, which is fight and then receive the rewards of fighting while she was at home raising their first daughter, pregnant with them second daughter and caring for her terminally ill brother. The audience applauded, as did millions of spectators. Ryan Gosling wins when he wins.

It was he who almost became an aphorism: “Being a sex symbol is somehow unsexy.” But when you meet him, you realize how controversial this statement is. Very controversial. Because you involuntarily catch yourself envy. It's me, the man. And women, something tells me, are in awe.

The thing is, Ryan Gosling is perfect. He is incredibly calm, he smiles discreetly, he has a strong handshake and confident movements. He doesn't shy away from answering. He is straightforward, but not at all naive. He is attentive and accurately notices details. He has an analytical mind and an absolutely sincere reluctance to use his physical advantages off the screen. On the contrary, he seems to be trying not to be conspicuous - black jeans, black polo, gray sweatshirt. But is this possible if you are blond with a hooked nose, thirty-four years old and 190 cm tall? If you are Ryan Gosling - with your talent to play only with your eyes the most tragic and the most romantic and with your article of a ballet dancer?

By the way, Gosling actually regularly attends ballet class - he hates the gym with that "static build-up of useless muscles." He recognizes only their use, their movement. And he confidently moves through life, guided by his special sense of rhythm. However, everything usually has a rough downside. I, suspicious, try to look at her in the ideal Gosling.

Psychologies:

I was preparing for an interview with you and watched a YouTube video of your band Dead Man’s Bones (“Dead Man’s Bones.” - Ed.). I won’t lie, it’s amazing: some kind of Halloween, turned into a music project...

Or rather, a hybrid of a freak show and “Hello, we are looking for talent!” - so it was thought...

“I began to realize early on that the world is a completely suitable place for happiness. Just not the whole thing"

Yes, Gogol Bordello with a children's choir, I understand. But this is so brave! The song “Pa Pa Power” with the text: “Broken glass, broken hearts, burning streets, burning cars...” And in the video there is a quiet, well-groomed provincial town of the past with the lifeless bodies of adults on the street and children, half-ghosts, half-zombies with an angelic appearance... Because it is known , that you are the creator, the motor and the inspirer of this phenomenon, I will not hesitate to ask: has the autobiographical crept in? I mean this image - a blond child as a source of horror and death for adults...

R.G.

(After a pause, during which he carefully looks into my eyes.): I did not expect that our conversation could result in a psychoanalysis session...

But children imitating zombies and ghosts are overtaking adults. Is there no presenting an account to the adult world on behalf of a once offended child?

R.G.:

We actually recorded an album with the children's choir of The Silver Lake Conservatory, children and children's voices are really the main component of the distinctive sound of our group and its image, we actually did a year-long tour of America performing with local children's choirs. And I really made my debut as a director with a film in which the main role belongs to children. But this does not mean at all that I consider the world of childhood to be an ideal. On the contrary, my notorious “inner child” did not survive...

Raising game

They say this is Gosling's determined attempt to win an Oscar. Despite the fact that in this film alone he has several competitors in the Best Supporting Actor category. There are Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, and Tracy Letts... But The Big Short is a particularly important film. It presents the mechanism of the most painful of the world economic crises of recent times - 2008. So what is clearly important here is not victory, but participation.

I do not believe. After all, it is he who knows how to rejoice, experiment, be outraged by injustice and makes us go to the movies to see action. We adults are conservative and reserved; the world of creativity rests solely on the “inner children.” That's exactly who you are. I've seen your films. And I know that you are a crazy racing car enthusiast and, in general... a motorcyclist.

R.G.:

You ask, but you don’t give an answer. So, my “inner child” did not survive. Just as not a single child has survived, everyone has become an adult. My inner child has matured, but, it seems to me, has not lost its most... sparkling qualities. You see, I found myself in adulthood early...

Namely on the Disney channel, as one of the “Mouseketeers” - along with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake?

R.G.:

Do you mean, didn't the world of show business, contracts, discipline, obligations put pressure on the children's psyche? No, it's unlikely. I am just one of the “survivors” - to whom the Almighty’s plan did not extend to child prodigy actors. That plan, according to which, by the age of 30, I had to have the usual set of young stars: two terms in a drug treatment center, three sex scandals, two broken paparazzi cameras and one criminal trial under the article “Hooliganism.” None of this happened to me, as you can see. First of all, in The Mickey Mouse Club I didn’t grab stars from the sky. It was a great success for a teenager from Canada to get there, but there I was stubborn and ended up mostly as a backup dancer. And secondly, I wanted to leave my childhood behind.

But nothing dramatic happened to you? Or I'm wrong?

R.G.:

Nothing in the usual sense, you're right. Except for one thing - our Cornwall in Ontario is located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. And on the other side is the USA. And there was Rocky, Rambo, real rock music. And the well-being of the middle class. And I was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. And they checked me endlessly... And somehow I had no friends. In general, I made my first friend when I was already 15. Cornwall is a provincial town with a paper mill as a city-forming enterprise. My parents separated when my father was fired from there. I was 13. Everything was destroyed... Actually, I had only one prospect - to grow up and go to work at the same plant. But the plant also closed at some point. It was a disaster for the city. And at the age of seven I realized that I had to get out of Cornwall. And then my paternal uncle settled with us. And he, you know, was a professional Elvis Presley impersonator. Moreover, without any external characteristics to this effect - he was bald and had a birthmark on his face. But he managed to be Elvis! His last name is Perry and he performed as Elvis Perry. He lived in our basement and rehearsed there, and I watched how one person was molded into another. That was the first time I saw... the act of acting. And since my sister and I sang at weddings - well, the bride is in a chair, this whole ritual, we sing in children's touching voices - my uncle took me on as an assistant, after all, I had some “stage experience”. I gave the ladies in the audience his scarves as gifts or brought a teddy bear when he sang “Teddy Bear”... And then I started winning some children's talent competitions. What’s funny is the clown sex dance, which involved girls and even ladies from the audience. I stopped being a child in the literal sense of the word when I decided that Cornwall was not for me. And when I realized that the solution for me was to scurry off to California as soon as I got my driver’s license. Even then I vaguely guessed that the world was a place quite suitable for happiness. Just not the whole thing.

Ryan Gosling's Three Lovers

Creative activity seems to be the most important thing for Gosling. After all, even his affairs took place in connection with work and exclusively with colleagues. Serious romantic relationship with Sandra Bullock began with the actor on the set of “Murder Countdown” and lasted two years (2002–2003).

A longer and more serious affair was with Rachel McAdams, not only a colleague and partner in the film “The Notebook,” but also a fellow Canadian. McAdams and Gosling got together in 2005, broke up in 2007, tried to reunite a year later, and then broke up for good.

Eva Mendes and Gosling met while filming the drama The Place Beyond the Pines (2012). The press has repeatedly announced their separation - the union of homebody Ryan and party-goer Eva seemed doomed. However, they are still together, and their daughter Esme (Esmeralda) turned one in September.

And at the age of 12 you started earning your first - and quite a lot - money. This is an achievement. What is your attitude towards money now? It just feels like you don’t value them enough - you made a career out of serious auteur films, but could have aimed at superheroes from comic books...

R.G.:

It's true, I prefer roles and stories over budgets. But you know, I always, after the “Fanatic” who made my name - and I was only 17 at that time - in the financial part of the contracts I provide for a small fee relative to the budget, but a significant percentage of the fees. I always believe that this “Valentine”, this “Drive”, this “The Notebook” will be more box office than “Avatar”!

And you also talk about the death of the “inner child”...

R.G.:

No, really, money is not an incentive. And even if they do stimulate it, it’s a bad incentive. A good ally, but a false incentive. I was recently convinced of this again - when I was making How to Catch a Monster, my first film as a director. We didn’t have money for professional lighting, we shot in natural light - and therefore fire is truly an all-consuming element there. We didn't have a budget for the set, so I chose Detroit, the city of the lost American dream, as the setting. And that’s why the landscape in “Monster” is so hopelessly sad. There was no money for costumes either, so Eva and I (Eva Mendes, actress, Gosling’s wife - Ed.) went to the Salvation Army store and brought a bale of junk. And they helped the artists, as they claimed, by choosing clothes from a bale, they mentally dressed their hero, invented him. It was the same in childhood - the question was not about more money, but about... a different life. And in many ways I am different. Someone who can have friends, who can protect loved ones.

“I announced that I was taking a break from work. I decided to reconnect with reality. Moved to New York, where she's waiting for you everywhere."

For some reason, whenever we men talk about an ideal life, it is always a life in which we ideally correspond to the stereotype “a man is a breadwinner and protector.” Although it cannot be said that in the 21st century something threatens our loved ones.

R.G.:

Not that this is about me... I, a feminist both by conviction and by life practice, definitely do not consider women the weaker sex. I have long wanted to have a child and was so happy about the girl - I really believe in her, and that is why she is Esmeralda, in honor of Hugo’s heroine, strong and resilient. And I have a hard time defining the concept of “masculinity.” But there is something tribal in us, something from that man in the skin, guarding his habitat, don’t argue. And I also have this from childhood. I was the only man left in the family, where there were only my mother and my sister, she is four years older than me. But I was a man. And you know, it was such torture in our provincial Canada - when my mother and I were walking down the street, and she was a very beautiful woman, and there were these men swirling around, honking from their cars and whistling at her from construction sites. And this happened regularly. And you’re eight or ten, and you can’t even punch anyone in the face. I still remember that helplessness. But also what amazing scenarios of my mother’s protection I pictured in my imagination then.

But it turns out that you still define masculinity: it’s when you can punch someone in the face...

R.G.:

Yeah, and especially often masculinity is demonstrated by women, who are distinguished by greater courage than us, I’m sure. I'm just against generalizations on any basis. For the role in “This Stupid Love” - I play a kind of macho there - I started reading glossy magazines for men. Everything about them is very respectable - how to dress, how to behave in different circumstances, what exhibitions to go to and how to pump up the abs. And the essays with columns are meaningful. But it seems to me that ultimately they are trying to sell a dream - to make us dream of some kind of... demo version of us. And I don't need to buy dreams. I have my own.

So you ironically noted that God has a plan for child stars. But seriously, do you think God has a plan for each of us? Does fate exist as destiny? Or all the work, effort, luck?

I thought about this question. And thinking. So far I have come to an intermediate conclusion: everything decides... how to put it... your sense of appropriateness. Here's the premiere of How to Catch a Monster in Cannes. And its deafening failure. I admit that I am mediocre. But this film, too, emerged from a pile of Salvation Army clothes, Detroit ruins and no-budget enthusiasm, its energy does not coincide with the energy of Cannes - red carpets, tails and jewelry. This is a mismatch of elements. The inappropriateness of this film in this place, no matter how prestigious it would be for a debut director to participate in the Cannes Film Festival. Yes, Cannes wouldn’t even have picked “Monster” if I hadn’t been the author. There was no place for him there. Or I was getting ready to play with Peter Jackson in “The Lovely Bones” and for this I gained 15 kg. But at the last moment the director decided to replace me with another actor. I was left with nothing - fat and unemployed. And then I realized: I make three films a year, I live in Los Angeles, where the lifestyle is known - from home to car, from car to studio or office, then back to car. Then I felt all my inappropriateness in the circumstances. I stopped facing reality altogether. I needed to reestablish that connection. I announced that I was taking a break from work indefinitely. Then it turned out that it was for three years. I took up Dead Man’s Bones, learned to play the piano and ukulele from YouTube, and changed my circumstances. And the place - moved to New York, where reality awaits you everywhere. Where I belonged. And God... You know, I'm Mormon. Their faith was of great importance in my upbringing. And this is not polygamy - there are almost no communities of this canon left, and they didn’t really insist on it. But Mormons believe that God is the father of the souls of all people and, like a father, knows and loves each person personally. And Christ is our elder brother, because he is the first son of God. So I have a kindred relationship with God - I can argue with him.

Destiny demo

It seems that Gosling has been going from victory to victory his entire young life. At the age of 16 he came to Hollywood and almost immediately got the role that made his name - in Henry Bean's The Fanatic (2001) about a young neo-Nazi Jew. And then he took another step forward and to the side - becoming the most romantic hero in Nick Cassavetes' The Notebook (2004), a poignant love story from the 50s, and in Derek Cienfrance's Valentine (2010), the film about love and disappointment, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. But the average lover hero was no match for the inflatable sex doll lover in Craig Gillespie's Lars and the Real Girl (2007, second Golden Globe nomination) and the drug-addicted teacher in Ryan Fleck's Half Nelson ( 2006, Oscar nomination). And they, in turn, paled in front of the hero of George Clooney’s own political pamphlet “The Ides of March” (2011) and the ridiculous macho in the comedy “This Stupid Love” by Glenn Ficarra (2011). True, these two films were somewhat fatal for the actor - no one had ever been nominated for a Golden Globe twice in the same year, and even for the third time. And so as not to receive an award... But Gosling is generally an exception to the rule.

On January 21, the biographical drama “The Short Game” about a group of financiers who managed to make money from the global economic crisis of 2008 was released in Russia. One of the main roles in the film, which is competing for an Oscar in five categories at once, was played by Ryan Gosling - he got the role of financier Jarel Vennett, who is not part of the circle of large bankers. Shortly before the premiere of HELLO! spoke with the actor, director and young father about the new film, filming with Brad Pitt and how to save his family from a financial crisis.

Blue eyes, platinum hair, impressive muscles. Ryan’s appearance begs to be described as “Hollywood handsome,” “sex symbol,” “heartthrob.” But the role of Ryan, who became famous in the film “The Notebook,” has long gone beyond tearful melodramas. He's 35 and has acted in serious dramas and cynical comedies, and two years ago he screened How to Catch a Monster at the Cannes Film Festival. This film stars actress Eva Mendes, whom Ryan has been dating for five years. Ryan and Eva prefer not to talk about their relationship: even the birth of their daughter Esmeralda in September 2014, the actors initially kept it a secret.

More than a year has passed since then, and on a December morning in New York during our conversation, Ryan is no longer so secretive: he talks with a smile about his daughter, with admiration about Eva Mendes and with excitement about his new role in the financial drama “The Big Short.” ". The plot centers on the 2008 crisis. Ryan is sure that such a topic is not only interesting, but also useful for those who want to save their money. And he adds: after such filming, he himself is ready for financial turmoil.

For the sake of filming Adam McKay's film, they learned about debt obligations and synthetic bonds (pictured from left to right): Jeremy Strong, Rafe Spall, Hamish Linklater, Steve Carell, Jeffrey J. Griffin and Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling as Jared Vennett in The Big Short

Ryan, viewers are used to seeing you as a platinum blonde, but in The Big Short you are unrecognizable with a head of dark hair...

I look creepy, don't I? Adam (Adam McKay, director - ed.) sent me the script for this film with the words: “Ryan, we will give your hero a big afro hairstyle.” I thought about it and agreed. As a result, I play financier Jared Vennett: an outsider who is not part of the circle of big bankers. A white crow with black hair.

So you did this financial drama because of your hair?

Of course not. What first attracted me was the script. I also immediately realized that I would have to learn financial terms in order to look convincing on screen. After all, “The Short Game” is a film about the 2008 crisis and about those visionaries who foresaw the collapse of the market.

And you knew nothing at all about the world of finance before filming? After all, you are not only an actor, but also a director, producer, you yourself earn millions...

Nothing really! I was never interested in lectures and master classes on economics, I never read literature on this topic, or watched analytical reports. So preparing for the role felt like going back to school or learning a new language: financial terms gave me a headache and made me feel like a complete idiot. Many people are probably familiar with this feeling: when bankers deliberately bombard us with clever words in order to fool our brains and take our money. But fortunately, there were plenty of real Wall Street financiers on site to turn to for advice. So now I’m savvy in this matter and recommend: don’t hesitate to ask when you don’t understand something. Everything can be figured out.

It looks like you can now become a financial advisor yourself.

It is not true. (Smiles.) But this picture really taught me a lot. I learned how much ordinary people suffered from the crisis: they were deprived of their jobs, their homes, and their lives were destroyed. You know, they say: the less you know, the better you sleep. But this case is an exception: we must remember the collapse of 2008 and understand its reasons so that this does not happen again. That's why we made the movie.

During the filming of The Big Short, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling worked so well together that they even appeared together at the Golden Globe Awards.

Brad Pitt, who was the producer of the project, starred with you in The Big Short. And he said that he was able to achieve financing only thanks to a great acting team: for example, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling...

Perhaps the other actors and I influenced the studio, because the topic of Wall Street has not been so popular recently. I know one thing: Brad is a cool guy and he always does what really interests him. He even plays such a person in the film - the idealist Ben Rickert, who at the most difficult moment managed to admit his guilt, resign and help people. In addition, do not forget that Brad is not only an excellent actor - he is also the father of six children. And he talks about the crisis from the perspective of a person who has great responsibility.

By the way, about the parallels between cinema and reality. In the film, your character says that he had many nicknames as a child. Can you say that about yourself?

At school everyone called me Trouble because I was an obnoxious guy. (Laughs.) Imagine, one day I brought knives to class and during the break I started throwing them at the schoolchildren.

Why did you do this?!

I was just an impressionable child and I wanted to try everything I saw on TV in life. I saw the idea with knives in the action movie "Rambo: First Blood". Fortunately, no one was actually hurt: I was quickly neutralized and expelled. (Laughs.) After that I was homeschooled. Doctors said I had attention deficit disorder. In addition, my parents divorced when I was 13 years old (Ryan was born into the family of paper mill worker Thomas Gosling and secretary Donna Gosling - Ed.). This traumatized me greatly, and after the divorce, my sister and I stayed with our mother. Apparently, this is why I have a slightly feminine mindset: I understand well what, how and why women think.

This probably helps you a lot in communicating with them?

I think yes, I understand them better than other men. But, I admit, despite this, I have always been shy with women. For example, I never knew how to approach a girl with pre-prepared phrases for getting to know each other. This is how arrogant you need to be! Or brave.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling, Toronto, September 2012

Modesty did not prevent you from meeting one of the sexiest actresses in Hollywood, Eva Mendes.

You're right. Eva is a gift from fate. I am often asked what qualities attract me in women. And now I know: my only requirement for a woman is that she be Eva Mendes. I am confident that I am in a relationship with the only right person for me. And I'm not going to look for anyone else.

Have you seen articles about you in magazines with the headlines “When to expect a wedding?”

I can answer this question with the words of Eva: “If you love someone, then everything else is a formality. The fact that society imposes on us reasons to quickly put a ring on our finger is not a reason for marriage. I don’t need a piece of paper to confirm my love ". I completely agree with her.

In 2014, your daughter Esmeralda was born. Who came up with the idea to name a girl that name?

Eva and I really like Victor Hugo’s novel “Notre Dame de Paris” and the name of the main character. In addition, this name is very popular in the Spanish-speaking community, and Eva’s relatives, who speak Spanish, liked it. And my daughter’s second name is Amada, in honor of her grandmother Eva. Translated from Spanish it means “beloved”.

Are you a responsible father?

Previously, it seemed to me that fatherhood was something complicated and unrealistic. And so, believe me, many men think. They see the baby and don’t know which side to approach him from. But now that I am a father myself, I have become more relaxed about my dad’s responsibilities: I can change diapers and put him to bed. I'm ready to do anything for my daughter. And it’s time to admit it: Eva’s and my life now revolves around this girl. (Smiles.)

You film so much. When do you see your family?

We don’t have nannies, so either Eva or her family sits with the child. And if she needs to leave, then I stay at home with Esmeralda. So we keep watch. In this regard, Eva is a super-responsible mother: she knows how to do several things at the same time. She is goal-oriented and always ready to help. For example, when we were filming my low-budget film “How to Catch a Monster,” she and the costume designer went to a charity organization and collected a bunch of clothes that we really needed. She understood how important this film, my first directorial project, was to me. Eva is wonderful. Although she really doesn’t like it when I praise her. So it's good that you only have an interview with me. Otherwise I would be in a lot of trouble right now. (Laughs.)

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling with daughter Esmeralda, November 2015

Text: Ekaterina Obelchenko, New York, specially for HELLO!

On October 18, Damien Chazelle’s biopic “First Man” about astronaut Neil Armstrong will be released on Ukrainian screens. The main role was played by Ryan Gosling. We've loved Ryan since The Notebook, but over the years he's played a variety of roles in films ranging from musicals to psychological dramas.

A few years ago, a book “100 Reasons to Love Ryan Gosling” was even published. We have our own reasons.

He's a feminist

Ryan grew up surrounded by women - along with his mother and sister. In one of his interviews, he jokingly said that he himself is 49% woman (in spirit, of course). Ryan believes that women are stronger than men, and emphasizes that his young daughters are ahead of their boys in development. He also admitted that it is women who make him better.

His look will melt the heart of any girl

Look into those sad, bottomless eyes that attract you more powerfully than any magnet. No matter how banal it may sound, but yes, you can drown in those eyes.

Family man

Ryan Gosling and actress Eva Mendes have two daughters - four-year-old Esmeralda and two-year-old Amanda. Gosling is a happy husband and father - he is sure that his children and wife are those that one can only dream of. He admits that it is impossible to prepare for fatherhood: life changes in an instant. But at the same time, Ryan thanks God for having children.

A real superhero

Once he saved a journalist who was almost hit by a taxi. She was lucky that her superhero was a famous Hollywood actor.

By the way, Gosling saves not only people, but also animals. Once in Palm Springs, Ryan was driving to a restaurant with his wife Eva Mendes, and the actor was almost run over by a dog. Ryan not only stopped, but also got out of the car and carried the dog to his terrified owners.

He was cute even as a child

Together with Justin Timberlake, Ryan was a member of the famous “Mickey Mouse Club,” where young talents made themselves known.

In the 1990s, Ryan played a couple of cameo roles in the TV series Are You Afraid of the Dark? and "Goosebumps". And then Ryan got the title role in the series “The Youth of Hercules.” Then the actor’s career only went uphill.

He ate cereal

In 2013, the Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal video became incredibly popular. The actor himself learned about its existence. A few years later, the author of the meme, 27-year-old Ryan McHenry, died of cancer. Gosling paid tribute to McHenry by filming a video in which he finally eats the cereal.

He is musical

You've probably watched La La Land. There Gosling showed his singing and dancing talents. We think that for Gosling the singer and dancer we should thank the same “Mickey Mouse Club” - Ryan rocked there, and before the “Club” he even participated in a talent show.
In addition, Ryan has an indie rock band, Dead Man's Bones, which the actor founded with his friend Zach Shields in 2007.
